Margaret climbed the weathered rungs of the nailed-on ladder, which led up the side of the old barn to the loft above the calf-feeding pen. It was 1947 and she was ten years of age—nearly two years older than her brother—and it wasn’t fair that Joey got to do important jobs on the farm, along with Dad, while she had to help Mom with the boring indoor chores.

Carefully lifting the old, crumpled photographs from the steel box, she recalls the various periods in which her life was marked by horrible, yet seemingly inevitable violence.

A few years ago I wrote a review of "Altered Carbon", by Richard K. Morgan. While heartily recommending the work, I raised a number of "quibbles", one of which I guessed might be a hook for a subsequent novel. Having now read the sequel, "Broken Angels", it is only fair an reasonable that I review it and my quibbles.

Alex sat back on his heels and brushed sweat off his forehead with the back of his wrist.

“Well,” he said, “just like the others.”

“Can you tell if it's the same poacher?” I asked. I was hunkered down beside him. As gruesome as the sight and smell was, it was no where near as bad as the other carcass we'd found in the crevasse. This body had been left unhidden, and while there were plenty of flies about, at least we were in the open air.

The defining moment in nineteen-year-old Travis Stoner's life occurred on a gloriously sunny morning in late September while he was out moose hunting in the vicinity of Shovel Lake with his granddad, Karl.
